I think 'personal space' is something that by nature we have in our minds. But if we think about the repercussions it has in our interactions with others and what it can reflect, we would be shocked!

We have to understand that distance zones or personal spaces are intrinsic in both human beings and animals; we consider them "as if [they] were an extension of our bodies". It's part of our nature!

Personal spaces include our possessions and goods.

However, it is also true that as human beings there are many differences in our conceptions of personal spaces. Why? Let's figure that out:

  1. The population of our hometown: Typically, people from rural zones have wider space bubbles than those from urban zones.

  2. Zone distances: Our personal spaces vary depending on our relationship with people.

3. Anxiety: Our space bubbles tend to expand when we feel nervous or anxious. It's a method of defense that our bodies have.

4. The combination: I think that the reasons that I just mentioned picture why our space bubbles are so varied! I think there are many elements involved in one's personal space. And something we must all understand is once again, we are all different! For example, even though I did not grow up in a rural zone, I prefer having a large space bubble. I don't feel comfortable in crowded places and I like to have my own stuff.

Just like in any foreign language classroom students usually feel nervous; in a TESOL classroom, students will likely feel anxious. If we want to help them feel comfortable and learn better, we should always keep this in mind. Many misunderstandings can be avoided! The golden rule here is always 'keep your distance'. It is somehow similar to the COVID-19 sanitary measure.

I'm sure students will allow us to enter into their personal bubbles if we earn their trust. Always in an appropriate and respectful way! Check this example out!

Hey Yeira:

I really enjoyed a lot to read your post!

I think it is very appropriate the video that you added because it shows how well we can know each other and the kind of treatment that we can have, the best part is to be sure that everything is consensual. It the base to respect the personal space of our students!

Great post!

I really enjoyed your post, I loved the images you put, and I agree that we can achieve a relationship with our students like the ones in the video if we earn their trust.

Thank you for sharing an amazing post.
